So what do you do? You decide that one way or another, you have to find the money to market your business or watch your competitors out-perform you…

But sitting idly by while your competitors build their brands, attract new customers and increase their revenue is not your only business solution.

So to help you achieve the success you dream of when you started the business, here are just 17 cost-free strategies you can use.

Category#1-Personal attributes/ skills:

1. Leverage your confidence

I can’t stress this enough and it’s a good place to start.

Confidence refers to your belief in your ability to handle challenges and succeed, whether in life generally or in specific situations.  Remember, it was what you used to start the business in the first place.

You need to demonstrate confidence in your capacity to create and bring a product or service to market and to seek out and build the relationships to grow your business.

I’m sure you know that when you are a small business owner, “YOU” are your business and your business is you. Therefore, your business will only go as far as you have the confidence to take it.

2. Practice “big thinking”

When I ask you to “think big”, I’m not asking you to engage in setting some ridiculous, unattainable goal that will eventually depress you. Rather, I’m asking you to let go of you self-imposed limitations.

According to Marc Winn: thinking big is about being open-minded, positive, creative and seeing opportunity in the big picture. I absolutely agree.

You may not want to believe this but it takes the same effort to think small as it does to think big. So why waste your energy on small thinking?

So think big about growing your business fast and write those goals down. Then choose one goal and decide on the first small steps you can take immediately. In this way your “big thinking” will not overwhelm you.

3. Hone your speaking skills

If you’re serious about marketing and promoting your business, honing your speaking skills is a necessity. You need to be able to share  your story, connect with your customers and perform your role as an influencer.

In addition, public speaking skills builds your confidence and enhances your critical thinking skills. So do get past your fear of public speaking and understand why as a small business owner, you really do need public speaking skills.

4. Know your business model

What is a business model? more specifically, what is your business model? In short, your business model is the logic behind your business. When you know and understand it, you make better decisions, waste less money, and build more resilient businesses.

In addition, it brings clarity to what drives your success.  Knowing what drives your success means you can replicate it intentionally rather than stumbling into growth, with no control.

It also allow you the flexibility and adaptability to deliberately respond to changes in your market or niche – pivoting a revenue change, or adjusting your value proposition. In essence, to grow your business fast.

5. Build meaningful, strategic relationships

There is a line of thought among too many entrepreneurs that once you have established a business it will somehow build itself. This thinking blinds you to the truth that you really build a business relationship by relationship.

And to grow your business with no or little money, you have to build relationships with your prospects, with your clients and customers, with suppliers and service providers. And don’t forget your banker, your funders and the government departments that you have to deal with.

You have to develop relationships with people who can advise and guide you, with people who have skills and resources that you don’t have and of course with your competition. Just remember to be strategic in your networking and create trust with whom you build those relationships.

6. Focus on the “majors” as well as the “minors”

No, I’m not talking music,  here’s what I actually mean.

Many small business people and entrepreneurs often only understand the “big picture” and pay little attention to details. Or, you are very good at trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together, without even looking at the picture on the box.

Being able to see the big picture as well as the small details and how they actually fit into the big picture is a very valuable business asset.

If you work on developing this skill, you will find that you will be able to read the wider business environment and then be able to make the changes in your business to quickly respond to these.

And when you master this, you will have a competitive advantage that you thought could only come with spending loads of hard cash.

7. Learn to take the right action at the right time

To achieve any of the other six essentials listed above, you need to take action. The problem is, taking action is not like buying a lotto ticket and hoping for the best. You have to figure out the next “right action”  that you have to take, especially when you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom.

Figuring out what to do next, often requires you to become good at solving problems seeing the big picture and becoming comfortable with asking for help.

In terms of asking for help, just remember that asking for help when you need it is a strength, not a weakness. Furthermore, very often it is the first “right” action that you must take to grow your business fast. And the benefits really outweigh the cost.

Category #2 – Cost-free business strategies

1. Leverage social media without paying for ads

The secret here is consistency and authenticity, not perfection. And what’s more, you don’t need a professional camera or a big budget — your smartphone is enough. What you should focus on is:

  • Posting 3–5 times per week to stay top of mind
  • Short-form video — platforms actively push this content to new audiences for free, meaning people who’ve never heard of you can discover you
  • Content types — rotate between educational content (tips, how-tos), relatable content (day-in-the-life, behind the scenes), and promotional content (offers, products). A good ratio is 80% value, 20% promotion
  • Engage back — reply to every comment and DM, especially early on. The algorithm rewards engagement, and it builds real loyalty
  • Use relevant hashtags and location tags to extend your reach beyond your current followers

The goal isn’t to go viral — it’s to be consistently visible and trustworthy to your target audience.

2. Exploit Google Business Profile

This is arguably the single most powerful free tool for any local business. When fully optimized, it can put you in front of customers who are actively searching for exactly what you offer. Here’s how to maximize it:

  • Fill out every single field — business hours, description, services, website, phone number
  • Add high-quality photos regularly — businesses with photos get significantly more clicks
  • Post updates weekly using the “Posts” feature — treat it like a mini social media feed
  • Enable messaging so customers can contact you directly from Google
  • Respond to every review — both positive and negative. It shows professionalism and Google rewards active profiles with better rankings

Fraud alert: I feel like such a fraud because I struggle to keep mine up to date.

3. Actively ask for reviews

Reviews are digital words-of-mouth and they work around the clock. Most people trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation. Here’s how to get more of them:

  • Ask immediately after a positive experience — that’s when customers are most enthusiastic
  • Make it easy — send a direct link to your Google or Facebook review page via WhatsApp or email
  • Train yourself (and your staff) to ask as a habit — a simple “We’d really appreciate it if you left us a quick review” goes a long way
  • Respond to every review — thank positive reviewers personally and address negative ones calmly and professionally. How you handle criticism publicly speaks volumes
  • Never buy fake reviews — platforms detect and remove them, and it can permanently damage your reputation

Over time, a strong review profile becomes a self-sustaining growth engine.

4. Collect word-of-mouth referrals

People trust recommendations and testimonials from friends and family above everything else. You can formalize this without spending a cent. How to make it happen:

  • Tell your best customers directly“My business grows through referrals. If you know anyone who could benefit, I’d really appreciate the introduction”
  • Create a simple incentive — a discount, a free add-on, or priority service for both the referrer and the new customer
  • Follow up on referrals quickly — if someone sends you a lead and you’re slow to respond, it reflects badly on both you and them
  • Acknowledge and thank referrers — even a heartfelt thank-you message builds goodwill and encourages them to refer again
  • Make referring easy — give people a clear message they can forward or a simple link to share

Caution: Make sure you collect testimonial from people who are similar to your customer or target base. Sharing a testimonial from your one very rich friend when your target customers are teachers will only frighten them away.

5. Network in online communities

This is about positioning yourself as a helpful expert, not a salesperson. If you can get this right, it builds trust and drives inbound inquiries naturally. A good approach is to:

  • Find the right communities — Facebook Groups, LinkedIn Groups, Reddit, WhatsApp groups, or industry forums where your ideal customers spend time
  • Lead with value — answer questions, share insights, offer encouragement. Do this consistently for weeks before ever mentioning your business
  • Let your profile do the talking — make sure your social media bio and profile clearly explain what you do and who you help
  • Avoid blatant self-promotion — most communities have rules against it anyhow and moreover, it damages your reputation very quickly
  • Build genuine relationships — the goal is to become the go-to person in that space, so when someone needs what you are offering, your name is the first that comes to mind

6. Consider content marketing / blogging

This is a long game but one of the most powerful. It’s also my favourite. Every article you publish is a permanent asset that can bring in traffic for years. So follow these tips for success:

  • Research what your customers search for — use free tools like Google’s autocomplete, “People Also Ask” sections, or AnswerThePublic.com to find real questions people are typing
  • Write genuinely helpful articles — not sales pitches. Answer the question fully and clearly
  • Be consistent — even one well-written post per week adds up to 50+ pieces of content in a year
  • Optimize basics — include your target keyword in the title, headings, and naturally throughout the text
  • Repurpose your content — turn each blog post into social media posts, short videos, or email newsletters. One piece of content can serve many purposes

Over time, this strategy builds authority in your industry and brings in customers who are already looking for what you offer.

7. Collaborate with complementary businesses

Think of this as borrowing each other’s audiences — everyone wins. The steps:

  • Identify the right partners — businesses that serve the same type of customer but don’t compete with you. For example, a photographer partnering with a wedding planner, or a gym partnering with a nutritionist
  • Start simple — agree to recommend each other to your respective clients and share each other’s content on social media
  • Co-create content — do a joint live video, write a guest blog post for each other, or host a free workshop together
  • Bundle services — offer a combined package that adds value for both your customer bases
  • Keep it reciprocal — the partnership works best when both sides are actively promoting, not just one

This approach can double your exposure overnight without spending a cent, and really grow your business fast.

8. Build email lists

Unlike social media followers, your email list is an asset you own completely — no algorithm can take it away from you. If you want to use it:

  • Create a compelling lead magnet — a free checklist, guide, mini-course, discount, or consultation that’s genuinely useful to your target audience
  • Promote it everywhere — your website, social media bio, in-store signage, at events, and in conversation
  • Email consistently — even once a week or bi-weekly keeps you top of mind. Share tips, updates, stories, and occasional offers
  • Segment your list — as it grows, separate customers from prospects and tailor your messages accordingly
  • Focus on relationship first, sales second — people buy from those they know, like, and trust. Build that through your emails before pushing offers

A list of even 500 engaged subscribers can be more valuable than 10,000 social media followers.

9. Follow up with past customers

Your existing customers already trust you — they’re your warmest audience. Yet most businesses completely neglect them. Here’s a process you can follow:

  • Do a simple audit — who hasn’t bought from you in 3, 6, or 12 months? Reach out personally
  • Personalize the message — reference something specific about their past purchase or experience
  • Give them a reason to return — a loyalty discount, a new product/service announcement, or simply checking in to see how they’re doing
  • Create a follow-up system — use a simple spreadsheet or free CRM to track customers and set reminders to check in periodically
  • Ask for feedback“How did everything work out for you?” shows you care and often leads to repeat business or referrals

This alone can generate significant revenue with zero marketing spend.

10. Show up on local/industry directories

Think of each directory listing as a free billboard that works 24/7. Here’s how to make that work for you:

  • Start with the big ones — Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Bing Places, and Apple Maps
  • Add industry-specific directories — every industry has niche directories that attract highly targeted customers
  • List with your local chamber of commerce — often free and great for local credibility
  • Keep information consistent — your business name, address, and phone number should be identical across every directory. Inconsistencies hurt your Google ranking
  • Add photos and descriptions everywhere — don’t just claim the listing and leave it bare
  • Check and update listings regularly — outdated hours or contact details frustrate potential customers and cost you business

Each listing also creates a backlink to your website, which gradually improves your Google search ranking for free.
